China study tours and student visas: choose by purpose

A school trip, exchange visit and enrolled course are not interchangeable. Ask what participants will actually do in China before assuming a tourist or student visa category.

Higher-education applicants: admission letter and JW201/JW202 confirmation; school-age applicants: the applicable elementary-stage study confirmation.

“Study tour” is not an automatic L-visa label. Nor does every exchange visit automatically mean X2. Describe the program, enrollment status and duration to the host and responsible consular office; resolve mixed tourism/study activities before submitting. The 180-day distinction describes the study categories, not a promise of the stay granted.

A school-side preparation checklist

  • Name a host contact who can explain the program, teaching or exchange activities and participant role.
  • Check that admission or invitation documents match the real participant and program dates.
  • Ask the host which study form applies; do not create a substitute JW201, JW202 or DQ form from an organizer spreadsheet.
  • Handle teachers and chaperones according to their own actual activities; their route is not automatically the students' route.

Keep school documents separate from the group progress sheet. The blank tools below are organizer aids, not official admission, invitation or visa forms.

Minors need an individual document check

For first-time applicants under 16, Los Angeles lists a child's birth certificate; it also lists parental documents for certain children whose parents were born in China. Follow the responsible office's child-specific instructions and resolve nationality/document questions early, rather than assuming every US-born child needs a Chinese visa.

  • Ask the school, airline and relevant authorities separately about guardian authorization, custody and travel-consent requirements for the actual trip.
  • A school permission slip does not replace consular documentation. Do not represent a generic consent template as an official universal requirement.
  • Use a guardian-document status in a restricted checklist, not birth dates, parent identity numbers or custody details in the shared roster.

Coordinate the trip after the purpose is settled

CEV's existing preparation and handoff services do not include school admission, issuance of study forms, work permits or residence permits. Confirm the specific application support available before ordering; the host and authorities remain responsible for their documents and decisions.
