How to Apply for a Chinese Visa, Step by Step

Published · Updated

A Chinese visa application has two connected parts: the online form and preliminary review, followed by the physical passport handoff and collection. If you are working out how to get a visa for China, follow the checkpoints below to see what comes next and where CEV can help.

For visa eligibility, categories and costs, see our companion article, “China Visa for US Citizens: What You Need in 2026.” Here, the focus is getting from the first form to your returned passport.

1. Open COVA and choose the right office

Start with the Chinese Embassy's COVA instructions, which link to the current China Online Visa Application system. Register with your email address, select the embassy or consulate responsible for your US residence, and read that office's application instructions.

You can complete the form in English and save your progress. To resume, open Personal Center and then My draft. Our service locations page helps you match your state with the consular jurisdiction and CEV service route.

2. Complete the form and organize your uploads

Check your name and passport details against the passport itself, including information the system reads automatically. Review your work, education, family and travel answers before submitting.

The system's document uploads use image files rather than PDFs; make each page complete and readable. Supporting documents depend on your visa category and circumstances. For example, the basic list includes passport-page images, proof of residence and your latest Chinese visa or residence permit where applicable.

Use the tourist visa document checklist for L-visa details, including previous Chinese nationality, name changes and special cases. Keep the online uploads and the originals needed later as two separate lists.

Where preparation help fits

CEV's human form review checks one submitted application for missing fields, formatting issues and inconsistent information. If you need help preparing the form as well, VIP Full Service provides a dedicated specialist for form preparation, materials review and coordination of consular drop-off and pick-up; shipping is separate.

3. Submit online, then watch for the next instruction

Submitting the form starts online preliminary review. Use COVA's application-status tool to follow it.

If the status reads “Rejected and to be modified,” follow the office's feedback to correct the application or add the requested materials. The next handoff comes when the status changes to “Passport to be submitted.” Passing preliminary review does not guarantee a visa, and officers may request more documents or an interview.

At this stage, distinguish official review from delivery tracking: COVA tracks your application, while CEV's order timeline records purchased document handoffs and carrier tracking follows shipments. A package arriving at CEV is a different milestone from delivery to the consulate.

4. Prepare the passport packet and arrange submission

Once COVA authorizes passport submission, print the application information page showing the submission status and barcode. Prepare the original passport and any additional originals the office requires, including an old passport containing a still-valid Chinese visa or residence permit when applicable.

The applicant or an agent can take the packet to the visa office. Keep any interview request in mind when planning who will attend.

For CEV drop-off, confirm the receiving instructions on your order before sending originals. The receiving address appears on your order page after ordering, and you can use your own shipping label or buy one in the order. CEV logs the packet, delivers the prepared documents in person and posts a submission update.

Choose the help that matches your progress:

  • Packet ready, need submission: select drop-off.
  • Already submitted yourself: check pick-up availability and the required receipt or authorization before ordering.
  • Need both consulate handoffs: select drop-off and pick-up.

The drop-off and pick-up page explains each option. These are physical handoff services; add form review or choose VIP when you need preparation support.

5. Collect the passport and arrange its return

The Embassy's pick-up slip gives an earliest estimated collection date. On or after that date, check that COVA shows “Passport to be collected” before arranging collection with the slip. If it does not, check for messages requesting more information, or ask your agent whether the office has contacted them.

The applicant or agent can collect the passport, and the visa fee is paid at collection.

CEV pick-up includes collection coordination, recorded custody and return-package preparation. Select tracked passport shipping if you need delivery back to you; inbound and return routes are configured separately. CEV supports tracked expedited options for passport shipments, not Ground.

Check the visa details as soon as you receive the passport, and report any error promptly to the issuing office. The Embassy's requirements call for checking the visa at collection and reporting inaccuracies immediately.

Chinese visa application FAQ

Can I complete my China visa application online?

You complete the form and preliminary review online, but the original passport still goes to the visa office. The Embassy does not accept mail-in visa applications; sending documents to CEV lets us make the purchased in-person handoff.

Does the processing clock start when I submit COVA?

The Embassy counts its published processing time from passport submission. Allow separately for preparation, online review and shipping; use our timing guide to plan those stages.

Can CEV guarantee approval or replace an interview?

No. CEV handles the services you select; the consular office decides the visa outcome and may require you to attend an interview.
