"Passport to Be Submitted": What Should You Bring for a China Visa?

If your China visa status reads “Passport to be submitted,” focus on the physical packet for your application. CEV Express's tourist visa requirements guide identifies the original passport, the printed application information page showing the current status and barcode, and any other originals the responsible office requires.

The status is a submission milestone, not confirmation that a visa has been issued. This article uses site information checked on November 1, 2026 and concentrates on the point when your materials are ready for handoff. For the full sequence, use the general tourist visa application guide.

Start with the current result, not an old packing list

Open the latest application result and read the accompanying instructions before printing or packing. The requirements guide says to monitor requests for corrections or additional uploads during preliminary review. Once the passport-submission status appears, use the current information page rather than an old confirmation-page checklist.

The useful final question is not simply whether you completed an online form. It is whether the physical materials match the application now ready for submission and the current instructions for your case.

If you are searching for “what to bring to a China visa appointment,” separate the document question from the handoff arrangement. Follow the responsible office's current submission instructions. For CEV Express service, confirm the purchased handoff and receiving method rather than assuming that a mailing address is an appointment location.

Prepare the current printed barcode information page

Print the application information page that shows “Passport to be submitted” and the application barcode, as described in the requirements guide. Check that the barcode and submission status are visible and that the page belongs to the application for the passport you will provide.

Do not substitute a previous confirmation page merely because you saved it earlier. The site's checklist specifically calls for the current information page. If your individual instructions request additional printed pages, include those as directed rather than treating this article as a fixed page-count rule.

Before setting the printout aside, compare the application details with your documents. The guide recommends checking names, passport information and applicable previous-passport documents. Resolve a mismatch through the current application instructions instead of hoping a different page in the packet will explain it.

Bring the right original passport and applicable older passports

Prepare the original passport used in the application. The requirements guide also identifies two situations that need attention:

  • If an old passport contains a still-valid Chinese visa or residence permit, prepare that old passport too.
  • Former Chinese nationals must also submit their latest Chinese passport, as required by the Embassy guidance described in the checklist.

These are conditional requirements, not an instruction for every applicant to bring every passport they have ever held. Read the conditions against your own records and follow any additional request from your consular office.

Keep the distinction between an uploaded image and a physical original clear. Uploading the passport's biographical page does not replace the original passport handoff. Likewise, the presence of an item in an upload checklist does not by itself tell you that every applicant must bring that item's original.

Include photographs, signatures and requested supporting originals

The after-online-review guide tells applicants to use their current instructions for printed forms, signatures, photographs, originals and supporting documents. Check all of those categories; an abbreviated passport-and-barcode list should not cause you to overlook a photograph or required signature.

For photographs, the tourist requirements guide includes a specific Embassy instruction: if the photo repeatedly fails the online system's check, bring a standard ID photo when submitting the passport. Follow the current photo instructions for your case rather than assuming that an uploaded photo settles every physical-photo requirement.

For other supporting documents, return to the case-specific checklist. It discusses circumstances such as proof of residence, lawful US residence for non-US citizens, previous Chinese nationality and a first application after a name change. Those circumstances are not identical for every traveler.

Make a final check for any other originals requested by the consular office. Identify the request behind each item instead of expanding a general checklist into an unsupported rule. The order's preparation information is specific to the service selected; a general article cannot replace it.

Match the packet to the handoff you purchased

With CEV Express drop-off service, a ready application and physical packet are handled through intake logging, handoff preparation, in-person delivery and a submission update. That service concerns the physical handoff; preparation or form review is separate.

If you already submitted the passport yourself, you may need pick-up rather than another drop-off. The pick-up after self-submission guide says to confirm the collection location, required receipt or authorization, and whether the selected CEV Express office can perform the handoff.

Keep submission documents and collection instructions distinct. Do not prepare another full submission packet simply because you are now arranging someone else's collection assistance. Follow the instructions for the remaining service and provide receipt or return details through the order's private process.

Confirm where the originals go

Before buying postage, confirm the receiving office and complete recipient details in your current order. Do not use an address copied from an old message, search result or unrelated office page. If instructions conflict, pause mailing and ask support to confirm them.

Mailing the packet to CEV Express is not a mail-in visa application to the Embassy. The general tourist guide explains that the consular passport handoff is a separate step. A carrier delivery notification therefore does not establish that the consular submission has occurred.

Plan the passport's return as well. The courier service configures inbound and return routes separately. Keep shipment tracking for the packages and use the order timeline for purchased handoffs. Online review, physical submission, collection and return are different milestones; none should be marked complete merely because an earlier one is finished.

Passport-submission FAQ

Does this status mean my visa is approved?

No. It identifies the passport-submission stage after preliminary review. The consular office still decides the application and may request more documents or an interview.

Is a passport and barcode page the complete list for everyone?

No. Prepare the current printed information page and original passport, then check photographs, signatures, applicable older passports and any other originals or supporting documents required for your case.

Should I print the confirmation page I saved at the start?

Use the current information page showing the passport-submission status and application barcode, as the requirements guide directs. Follow any additional page instructions in your application.

Can I mail the packet before confirming the address?

Confirm the complete receiving instructions first. The selected service and applicant location affect the route, and a mail intake point is not automatically a walk-in counter.
