How to Check China Visa Status and Understand the Next Action
To check China visa status, first identify which part of the process you are asking about. The official application system follows consular review. CEV's order timeline follows purchased document handoffs. Carrier tracking follows shipments. These are connected, but a delivery update is not a visa decision.
This guide maps those checkpoints to practical next actions using public information checked on October 30, 2026. For the full application walkthrough, see how to apply for a Chinese visa. Here, start with the latest message you actually have.
Choose the right place to check
For China visa application status, use the official China Online Visa Application system, or COVA. Start from the Chinese Embassy's online application instructions, which provide the official application-system link. Follow the office responsible for your application.
For a CEV service order, use the site's Track order entry. This is the CEV document-order tracking page, not a consular status checker. Keep your order instructions available when checking the purchased services and their progress.
For a shipped packet, use the shipment's carrier tracking. CEV's passport courier service provides tracking for supported shipments and separates inbound and return routes. Check which journey the tracking number belongs to before interpreting the update.
A useful note has three separate lines: official application instruction, CEV handoff milestone and carrier event. Put the latest update under its own heading. Avoid combining them into a single “approved” or “finished” label.
When the online application needs a correction
The Embassy's online instructions describe a status indicating that an application was rejected for modification. The next action is to read the feedback, correct the application or supply the additional documents requested. Treat that message as an instruction about the online review stage, rather than substituting your own conclusion about the final visa outcome.
Work through the request item by item. Compare the requested correction with the document or application answer it concerns, and keep the exact request available while making the change. Then follow the official system's instructions for submitting the corrected information.
If you want help checking the form, CEV's human application review checks missing fields, formatting problems and inconsistent information. That assistance does not control the consular decision. Keep the official feedback as the starting point for any review request.
When the passport-submission instruction appears
The status “Passport to be submitted” marks the next physical-document step. The tourist visa checklist explains preparing the current application information page with its barcode, the original passport and any additional originals required for your case.
Online preliminary approval does not guarantee visa issuance. Before sending anything, compare the current official instructions with the documents you have prepared. An application moving forward online is a reason to prepare the specified handoff, not a reason to assume the visa is already in the passport.
If CEV will deliver the packet, follow the after-online-review guide. Confirm the purchased service, receiving office, complete address and current checklist before buying postage or sending originals. Keep the receiving instructions with the shipment details so you can distinguish delivery to CEV from the later consular submission.
When the packet has reached CEV
A carrier delivery to CEV and CEV's consular drop-off are different milestones. The drop-off service includes intake logging, handoff preparation, in-person delivery and a submission update.
Check the order timeline for the purchased handoff rather than treating the inbound carrier scan as proof of consular receipt. If the last event is unclear, ask about that event specifically: has the packet arrived at the receiving office, or has the consular drop-off been recorded?
Keep timing questions equally precise. The processing-time guide distinguishes preparation and online review from the Embassy's processing reference, which starts with passport submission. It does not provide a fixed duration for online preliminary review. A service order date is therefore not the start of every official processing clock.
When you are waiting for collection
The Embassy's collection FAQ describes the date on the pick-up slip as the earliest estimated collection date. On or after that date, check for “Passport to be collected” before arranging collection with the slip.
If collection is not indicated, check for messages requesting more information or ask your agent whether the office contacted them. Follow your handling office's current instructions. Do not turn the printed estimate into a promised collection or delivery date.
If you submitted the application yourself, pick-up assistance may cover the remaining consular handoff. CEV must confirm the servicing office and the receipt or authorization needed for collection. Arrange that before assuming someone else can collect on your behalf.
When the passport is being returned
Collection and delivery back to you are separate steps. CEV pick-up includes collection coordination, a recorded handoff and return-package preparation; select tracked return shipping when you need the passport mailed back.
Check the return shipment's tracking number, not the one used to send the original packet. Once the passport arrives, inspect the visa details and report inaccuracies promptly to the issuing office, as described in the application walkthrough. Do not use a completed shipping event as a substitute for checking the returned document.
For a question about CEV's handoff or receiving instructions, use the order's support route or contact CEV. Keep receipts, passport details and order access links out of public questions or reviews. Ask privately about the last confirmed milestone and the action still required.
China visa status FAQ
Where can I do a China visa status check online?
Use COVA through the Embassy's official instructions for the visa application. Use CEV's Track order entry for your service order, and carrier tracking for a shipment.
Does preliminary acceptance mean my visa was issued?
No. Preliminary review and visa issuance are distinct. Follow the next official instruction, including any request for originals, additional information or an interview.
Does a delivered package mean the consulate has my passport?
Check the destination and milestone. Delivery to the CEV receiving office is separate from the purchased consular drop-off and its submission update.
Can CEV promise the day my passport will return?
No. CEV cannot promise visa issuance or a completion date. Check the official application, collection instructions and return shipment separately rather than relying on one overall estimate.
