China work visa processing time and cost: plan every stage
The consulate's visa-processing estimate is only one part of a work relocation. Build a budget and work backward from a provisional start date without treating a deadline as an approval promise.

Four clocks, not one turnaround
Stage
Employer's work-permit notification
- Published reference / planning basis
- Obtain the local authority's estimate through the employer; no nationwide end-to-end duration is verified here.
- What the clock excludes
- Document preparation, certification, corrections and employer readiness can change the schedule.
Stage
US online preliminary review
- Published reference / planning basis
- Follow the responsible consulate's status and requests; no fixed duration is verified here.
- What the clock excludes
- This occurs before passport submission and is not final approval.
Stage
Visa-office processing after passport submission
- Published reference / planning basis
- Embassy: regular 4 business days; express 3 business days for urgent cases. San Francisco: regular 4; express 2–3 business days for urgent cases. These are published averages for reference, checked October 1, 2026.
- What the clock excludes
- Not shipping, online review, China permits or a guaranteed pick-up date. Express availability and additional requests are determined by the office.
Stage
After-entry applications
- Published reference / planning basis
- Where required, residence application within 30 days of entry; check the visa remarks and short-stay exception. Shanghai separately instructs work-permit application within 15 days after entry.
- What the clock excludes
- These are application deadlines, not processing-duration estimates. Confirm the actual city's requirements with the employer.
Build a budget by payee
Amounts are in USD unless stated otherwise. The official US-citizen rate below was checked October 1, 2026; nationality affects consular fees. CEV prices use the site's current service pricing and are per applicant. The table is a budget worksheet, not an all-inclusive relocation quote.
Cost item
Consular visa fee — US citizen
- Amount or basis
- USD 140, regular service
- Budget instruction
- Reduced rate through December 31, 2026. Recheck the fee notice for applications after that date; ask the office for other nationalities.
Cost item
Consular express surcharge
- Amount or basis
- USD 25 per visa, if approved
- Budget instruction
- Separate from CEV services and courier speed. Do not add it unless the consular express option applies.
Cost item

- USD 39.00
- Budget instruction
- One service choice for the US document handoff.
Cost item
CEV pick-up only · standard consular processing

Cost item
CEV drop-off and pick-up · standard consular processing
- Amount or basis
- USD 78.00
- Budget instruction
- Choose this combined service instead of adding all three CEV rows.
Cost item
Shipping and optional preparation help
- Amount or basis
- Shown for the selected options before payment
- Budget instruction
- Count the required shipping legs and any form review, photo or VIP assistance you select.
Cost item
China-side and document preparation expenses
- Amount or basis
- Confirm separately with the employer and relevant providers
- Budget instruction
- Budget any required medical, certification, translation and residence expenses. These are not included in CEV's US handoff price, and this page does not offer China permit services.
With standard consular processing, Drop-off is USD 39.00, Pick-up is USD 39.00, and both are USD 78.00 per applicant. With express consular processing, Drop-off is USD 49.00, Pick-up is USD 49.00, and both are USD 98.00 per applicant. VIP prices are unchanged. Consular express processing is not a CEV completion-time promise. Prices are in USD per applicant. Carrier postage, official fees and optional services are separate. Confirm the current selection and total before checkout.
Your visa-support subtotal = consular fee + applicable express surcharge + one chosen handoff service + selected shipping and preparation services. Keep China-side expenses in a separate budget and check currency before adding them.
Work backward from the proposed start date
Use this sequence as a planning tool, not a calculated eligibility or delivery result. Write an owner and a provisional date beside every step. A missing official estimate remains an open item; do not substitute the consular four-day reference for it.
- Start date: ask the employer when the required work and residence permissions can be in place. Keep the employment start conditional until confirmed.
- Arrival: reserve time for local appointments and required applications. Record the actual entry date and the applicable after-entry deadlines.
- Travel: allow for passport return and check the issued visa's entry validity, entries and remarks before finalizing travel.
- US handoff: add selected shipping time, visa-office processing, closures and a contingency for requests or an interview.
- Online review: allow time to upload, correct and respond. Wait for the office's instruction to submit the passport.
- Employer preparation: obtain the notification estimate and work backward again through eligibility evidence and any required certification. Start when the employer and assignment are identified; there is no reliable fixed number of weeks for every case.
Why there is no CEV Z-visa median here
We do not publish a Z-specific processing median or a five-district Z turnaround chart: the available historical timing sample is below our publication threshold of 20 orders. An all-visa average would not measure the China work-permit or residence stages and should not set an employment deadline. This page uses dated official references and a planning worksheet instead.
If the start date is getting close
Ask the employer which prerequisite is still unresolved and the responsible consulate what urgent handling, if any, is available for the visa stage. Faster courier service cannot shorten official review. Discuss a revised start date if necessary; do not replace the work route with a tourist or business application merely to travel sooner.
