China's 10-year multiple-entry tourist visa for US citizens

US citizens can apply for a multiple-entry tourist (L) visa valid for up to 10 years under the China–US reciprocal arrangement. The consulate decides what to issue, including the length of each stay. CEV cannot guarantee a 10-year visa.

Three separate rules: validity, entries and stay

A visa's validity, its permitted entries and its duration of each stay answer different questions. A 10-year validity does not mean permission to stay in China for 10 years. The official sources below were verified on October 1, 2026.

Who decides whether you receive 10 years?

The 2014 long-validity notice established the up-to-10-year multiple-entry arrangement for US tourists. The Embassy's 2023 notice also refers to applications for new 10-year multiple-entry visas. These official notices establish the option; they do not establish an entitlement for every applicant.

The Embassy's September 2025 guidance says consular officers decide issuance, visa type, validity, number of entries and duration of each stay. They consider your purpose of travel, planned stay and supporting documents. The visa issued may differ from what you requested on the form.

Passport validity is not a promise of visa validity

Check your passport against the current application requirements before applying. Do not assume that a passport meeting the minimum requirement guarantees any particular visa validity. If your passport is nearing renewal and you want a long-validity visa, confirm the current requirements with the consulate handling your application.

Before planning repeated visits

  1. First confirm that your itinerary needs a visa; the related visa-or-transit guide helps you check that decision.
  2. Prepare the current L-visa documents and describe your actual travel plans accurately in the application.
  3. When your passport is returned, check the visa's validity, entries and duration of each stay before relying on it for a trip.

CEV can help with consular drop-off and pickup, but it is an independent service provider, not an embassy, consulate or government-affiliated organization. Paying for our service does not secure a particular visa outcome. We cannot guarantee issuance, a 10-year validity or a particular stay length.
