Former Chinese citizens: old passports and your first China visa
Organise the link between your former Chinese passport, naturalization record and current passport. Missing records and name differences need the responsible office’s instructions, not a guessed exemption.

First application after naturalization
New York’s current visa instructions ask former Chinese nationals applying for their first Chinese visa after naturalization to upload the Chinese passport biographical page and naturalization certificate. Its original-document list also requires the latest Chinese passport. Prepare the current passport and the other visa documents too.
This page explains documents for that application situation. It does not determine your nationality or decide whether an individual belongs in a visa or travel-document process.

This is a preparation worksheet. It is not a legal finding about the date nationality changed. San Francisco asks for an official name-change document when the current foreign passport differs from the last Chinese passport or visa.
If the old passport is missing
Los Angeles provides an official Chinese Passport Loss Declaration Form in its visa-material table when the Chinese passport is lost or expired for more than five years. That is a Los Angeles instruction; do not assume the same declaration or acceptance rule applies elsewhere. Open the form from the office’s current page rather than using a recreated template.
- Write down which document is unavailable and why, without guessing its contents.
- Locate any genuine copy and relevant identity records you already have.
- Ask your responsible consulate which declaration, replacement evidence or originals it requires before shipping a partial packet.
If you already have a Chinese visa
The Embassy FAQ explains when a still-valid visa in an old passport may be used with a new passport: the listed identity details must remain unchanged and the trip purpose must match the visa. Review those conditions with the office if anything has changed. A family member’s successful application does not establish the documents or result for yours.
- Keep the prior visa, old foreign passport and current passport together for comparison.
- Do not change the recorded identity history to make documents appear consistent.
- For a US-born child, use the child-specific guide; the parent’s naturalization record is not by itself a decision about the child.
