Coordinate two countries and three separate documents: the work-permit notification, the Z entry visa and the permits needed after arrival. Start with the employer in China, then prepare your US application.

## Start with the job and the Chinese employer

The Z category is for work in mainland China. A job offer alone is not the work-permit notification required for the US visa application. Ask the employer in China to confirm the work-permit route with its local authority before setting a start date. This guide covers the usual employer-sponsored route; short assignments and special categories need case-specific confirmation.

## One journey, two jurisdictions

## After-entry deadlines belong on the plan

For a visa requiring residence formalities, apply to the local public-security exit/entry authority within 30 days of entry (Exit and Entry Administration Law, Article 30). Chicago's FAQ identifies Z holders among those affected, except where the visa's duration of each stay is marked 30 days. Follow the actual visa remarks and confirm the short-term route before travel.

Shanghai's work-permit guide separately says to apply for the work permit within 15 days after entry. That is a local instruction, not a nationwide processing promise. Ask the authority in the employer's city for its current procedure; plan this alongside the residence application rather than waiting until day 30.

Accommodation registration is another task: hotels register guests; for non-hotel accommodation, the foreigner or host must register with local public security within 24 hours of arrival at the accommodation (Article 39).

## Family members travel on their own eligibility

For visits to a foreign national working or studying in China, S1 covers intended stays over 180 days for a spouse, parents, parents-in-law or children under 18; S2 covers visits of no more than 180 days and has a wider family definition. Both also include certain private affairs. A dependent's permission does not itself authorize employment.

The Embassy lists an invitation, the inviter's passport and residence evidence, and relationship evidence. S1 requires the relationship original for verification; S2 lists a copy and accepts the inviter's residence permit or visa. If the worker has not yet entered China or obtained residence documentation, ask the responsible consulate what it will accept for accompanying applications. Do not assume the family can all apply or receive passports together.
