For a normal tourist trip to mainland China, US citizens need a visa. A qualifying trip through China to a third country or region may instead use 240-hour visa-free transit. Start with your passport and complete itinerary before buying a visa service.

## Match your trip to the rule

This table is for US citizens holding ordinary passports. As verified on October 1, 2026, the United States is not on China's 30-day unilateral visa-free entry list. Living in the US does not make that policy apply to a US passport; if you hold another nationality's passport, check the official list for that passport.

| Your situation | What applies | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| US → mainland China → US for tourism | A normal tourist trip requires a visa. Returning to the same country is not transit to a third country or region. | Arrange your tourist (L) visa before travel; a short visit alone does not qualify for 240-hour transit. |
| US → China → a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket within the 240-hour limit | 240-hour visa-free transit may apply to US ordinary-passport holders. | Confirm the onward departure date and seat, an eligible port and every planned stop within the permitted areas against the current NIA list; confirm the itinerary with the airline before travel. |
| Your route, onward ticket, port, stay area or length of stay does not meet the transit conditions | Do not rely on the 240-hour exemption for this itinerary. | For a normal tourist trip, plan for an L visa; resolve any uncertainty with the official immigration authorities before booking a visa service. |
| You expect 30-day visa-free tourist entry simply because you have a US passport | The unilateral 30-day exemption is not available to US citizens as of October 1, 2026. | Check the current official nationality list before departure; the 240-hour transit policy is a separate, conditional option. |

## Check all the transit conditions together

The NIA's August 20, 2026 policy lists US citizens among eligible nationalities and 65 designated ports in 24 provincial-level regions. Permission to use a port does not mean you can travel anywhere in China: your visits must stay within the permitted areas. Use the NIA source below for the official port and area table.

1. Write down the full route into and out of China, including the onward country or region. A return to your country of departure does not meet the third-country-or-region condition.
2. Have the onward ticket with a confirmed seat and departure date within the permitted time. The NIA counts the 240-hour stay from 00:00 on the day after entry.
3. Check the eligible ports and permitted stay areas on the current NIA list, then confirm your actual itinerary and travel documents with the airline before departure.

## When you do not need our visa service

If your trip qualifies for visa-free transit, you do not need to apply for a tourist visa for that trip and do not need CEV's visa application service. Confirm eligibility first; do not buy a visa service just because you are stopping in China.

If you do need an L visa, the related guides explain the application requirements and what a 10-year multiple-entry visa means. CEV is an independent service provider, not an embassy, consulate or government-affiliated organization. We cannot guarantee visa issuance or eligibility for visa-free transit.
