# China M-visa validity, multiple entries and permitted stay

US citizens may apply for a business visa valid for up to ten years under the reciprocal arrangement. Validity, number of entries and the length of each stay are separate terms decided by the consular officer.

## Read three fields, not one headline

| Field | Question it answers | Action for the itinerary |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Validity / Enter Before | Until when can I use the visa to enter? | Compare each intended mainland arrival with the issued visa’s entry-validity date. |
| Entries | How many times can I enter? | Check whether the visa permits one, two or multiple entries and whether any have been used. |
| Duration of each stay | How long can this visit last? | Read the actual permitted days; a ten-year visa is not permission to remain for ten years. |

The 2014 Los Angeles Consulate notice explicitly includes M visas in the up-to-ten-year arrangement for US citizens and states a passport-validity condition of more than one year. Its older application procedures should not replace the current COVA instructions. Current Embassy guidance confirms that issued terms may differ from the requested terms. ## Check a multi-stop business itinerary

This is an illustrative route check, not a booked trip or a visa prediction.

| Planned movement | Mainland entry to account for | Check before committing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| United States → Guangzhou for meetings | First mainland arrival | Visa purpose, entry validity, available entries and permitted stay. |
| Guangzhou → Hong Kong | Departure from mainland China | Separate Hong Kong entry requirements for your passport. |
| Hong Kong → Shenzhen for a supplier visit | A further mainland arrival | Another entry must be available; a used single-entry visa does not cover this return. |
| Shenzhen → United States | End of the second mainland stay | Departure must comply with the stay authorized for that visit. |

## Before reusing a visa or extending a trip

- If a usable visa remains in an expired passport, the Embassy FAQ permits travel with both passports when name, gender, date of birth and nationality are unchanged and the travel purpose matches that visa. Check all those conditions first.
- Do not assume a one-year or ten-year visa gives a standard 30-, 60- or 90-day stay. Read the document issued to you.
- If plans require a longer stay after entering China, ask the local public-security exit-entry authority about extension requirements before the authorized stay ends. An extension is not automatic and this guide does not calculate a lawful last day.
- For a changed travel purpose, confirm the correct route with the responsible authority; repeated business entries do not substitute for permission to work in China.

## Passport-return inspection

- Check personal information and passport number immediately.
- Compare visa category, entry-validity date, entries and permitted stay with every leg of the itinerary.
- If there is an error, contact the issuing office promptly before travel; ask CEV about the purchased handoff if needed.
